UNIX based systems
UNIX is interactive, multiuser, multitasking operating system with long history
It was created already at 70-tees in american Bell Laboratories and was initially determined for mainframes with much greater performance in that times than performance of micro-computers or later of first personal computers.
UNIX is completely frequent system on computers of working station category today, which are used in middle or large companies or at universities. It's especially feasible, when computers are connected to network. Because the technical parameters of personal computer are advancing rapidly, several Unix versions were developed for them. Very popular is free version called LINUX.
One of the main advantage against Windows system are relatively low demands on hardware and very good performance. There is often more documentation at disposal and more programs, usually public domain by the GNU General Public License (licence used for GNU software).
Windows systems
Windows is interactive, monouser, multitasking operating system.
We can consider Windows NT and 2000 stable operating system. Removing the DOS has contributed to stability, but makes the system less compatible with older programs. The memory management was improved too, mainly when there is a memory lack, which was another problem of previous Windows. Than DLL libraries took better support and there is the possibility to run several different DLL versions with given applications.
Relatively basicaly changed was driver control system. Windows is able to block the problematic driver or use previous version.
Windows 2000 and Windows NT systems are competitive option to UNIX based server systems. Their advantage is mainly the habit and understanding of lay users.
